Advancing Data Privacy and Security: Insights from the DUCA Project

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to an unprecedented increase in the number of connected devices, generating vast amounts of data as a result. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under the Horizon 2020 programme, the DUCA project [1] aims to address the growing concerns around privacy and data protection. The project aims to equip European users and organisations with the necessary tools to take control of their personal data, ensuring its confidentiality and security.

DUCA’s comprehensive privacy-enhancing framework is platform-independent and compatible with a variety of architectures and deployment models. By focusing on three main use cases – smart energy, big data usage control and collaborative mobility with artificial intelligence – DUCA aims to provide robust and adaptable solutions to contemporary privacy challenges.

As part of this effort, Davide Ferraris, professor at the University of Malaga (UMA) [2]  has been actively involved in the project. During a two-month secondment in the summer of 2023 at CUBIT, a company located in Pisa, Italy, we initiated significant work on the requirements and architecture part of the DUCA platform. Specifically, UMA (and particularly through its main cybersecurity research team, NICS Lab [3]) concentrated on the task related to the requirements for DUCA (led by CUBIT) and on the task related to the design and development of the DUCA framework architecture (led by UMA).

Looking ahead, Davide is excited to continue this fruitful collaboration with CUBIT during his next three-month secondment in the summer of 2024. Our joint efforts as research team will not only further the project’s goals, but also contribute to academic research, as we plan to co-author several research papers. Together, we aim to push the boundaries of privacy and data protection, ensuring a safer digital environment for all.

Stay tuned for updates on our progress and the innovative solutions we are developing in the framework of the DUCA project.
